Description: Text written under photo: "Moument [sic] to volunteers-Van Ness Avenue and Market St., 1906. The crossing at these street is called "The Long Crossing." View taken a few months after the fire looking northeast shows the Volunteer Monument with Van Ness on the left and Market Street heading downtown at the right. The Call Building can be seen in the distance. Most of the area is still in ruins although a row of one-story wooden buildings have been built right behind the monument, along with the Grand Central Hotel a bit further away. Only a few carriages are visible; traffic at this corner eventually got so heavy that the monument was moved west a few blocks to Dolores and Market.
